Laoag, Ilocos Apr 15, 2023 (Issuewire.com) - A congressman from the Philippines is now taking action on his own call by building marine sanctuaries in the countrys waters.
On May 1st, Angelo Marcos Barba, with the help of the Pinto Art Museum, the Municipality of Currimao, the Philippine Navy, the Air Force, the Coast Guard, and several marine biologists, will be launching what is likely to be the biggest underwater museum in the country.
The Filipino politician has always been a staunch environmentalist and many of the 120 House Bills he has filed since 2019 address key environmental issues. His latest call for preserving marine sanctuaries was answered by no other than himself and one of his closest friends Dr. Joven Cuanang, the owner of Pinto Art Museum.
Over 20 sculptures will be submerged in Pangil Beach and Poblacion on that day, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and said sculptures would be used for marine ecosystem regeneration.
The coastal town of Currimao has suffered from dynamite fishing over the past few decades which resulted in the destruction of its coral reefs. On May 1, we will be able to do something about it by putting suitable homes for marine life, Barba expressed.
According to the Office of Congressman Angelo Marcos Barba, the project is a monumental yet very exciting task as it will take several military personnel, including tactical divers from the Coast Guard, to put the sculptures in place.
These sculptures are heavy. The heaviest we have weighs almost 2 tonnes, the congressman said.
This operation requires military precision. That is why we asked the Navy to send one rotary aircraft to help us move the sculptures from the bay walk to the sea. They will then be lowered slowly so that the tactical divers can get them down into the water."
